Sea, Salt & Paper is a quick, clever little card game where timing, combos, and bold decisions rule the sea! Designed by Bruno Cathala and Théo Rivière, this pocket-sized game draws players into a minimalist world of origami sea creatures, fun, and unpredictable round endings.

On your turn, you’ll collect cards to build powerful sets, trigger card effects, and rack up points. But here’s the catch: once you feel confident in your hand, you can end the round… but will you stop and play it safe, or take the last chance and dare others to catch up?

Sea, Salt & Paper is simple to learn but full of sneaky twists, tactical timing, and delightful card combos. It’s ideal for 2 to 4 players and plays in around 30 minutes.

How to Play Sea Salt & Paper

Game Objective

Score the most points by creating combos and using card effects smartly. The game ends when a player reaches 30/35/40 points (depending on player count), or instantly if someone collects 4 mermaids!

Game Setup

• Shuffle all the cards into a single draw deck.
• Flip two cards face-up to form two discard piles.
• Leave the player aids nearby.
• Choose the starting player at random.

Turn Structure

Each player takes turns clockwise. On your turn:

Step 1: Draw a card (mandatory)

You must take a card using one of these two options:

• Draw two cards from the top of the deck. Keep one and discard the other to either discard pile.
• Take the top card from one of the discard piles. (You can’t peek into the discard stacks.)

Step 2: Play Duo cards (optional)

If you have a matching Duo pair (like 2 fish or 2 crabs), you can play them to trigger their special effect. You may play multiple Duos per turn.

Step 3: End the round? (optional)

If you’ve scored 7 or more points from your hand and played cards, you may end the round by saying either:

• STOP: All players reveal and score.
• LAST CHANCE: Others take one final turn each, then everyone reveals. If you still have the most points, you score your points + a color bonus (1 point per card of your most common color). Others score only their bonus. If you’re beaten, you get only your bonus!

If the deck runs out, the round ends immediately without scoring! Points are added across rounds until someone reaches the target score.

End of a Sea, Salt & Paper Game

The game ends when a player places 4 Mermaid cards – they win instantly! Or, someone reaches the point threshold:

• 2 players → 40 pts
• 3 players → 35 pts
• 4 players → 30 pts

Highest score wins. Ties go to the player who ended the last round.
