Board Game: The Staufer Dynasty
• As is its custom, German publisher Hans im Glück debuted one somewhat-involved new strategy game at Spiel 2014, the game in question being Andreas Steding's The Staufer Dynasty. I played a prototype of the game in April 2014 and previewed it on BGG News in October, and the game is essentially the HiG DNA from other games distilled and concentrated in terms of what players are challenged to do.

Board Game: Carcassonne
Board Game: Carcassonne: Gold Rush
• Moritz Brunnhofer from Hans im Glück talked about a few new games in the BGG booth at Spiel 2014, but since much of the company's focus at the fair was on — what else? — perennial bestseller Carcassonne, multiple Carcassonne promo items and mini-expansions, and the latest spin-off title in the "Around the World" series — Carcassonne: Gold Rush, he also spent time presenting an overview of those items:

Board Game: Saint Petersburg (Second Edition)
Carcassonne wasn't the only HiG title with a new coat of paint at Spiel 2014. The second edition of Saint Petersburg from designer Bernd Brunnhofer and expansion designer Karl-Heinz Schmiel was also at the show, but in addition to a paint job this version includes new tire modules, room for a fifth player, and other changes.

Board Game: Spyfall
• I know that Alexandr Ushan's Spyfall from Hobby World is a party game in which one player is a spy who is trying to uncover the location where everyone else is located. What I don't know is why the spy would be questioning other people to try to determine what the location is when he can just look around and see for himself — or perhaps I'm being too logical here...

Board Game: Viceroy
• Yuri Zhuravlev's Viceroy from Hobby World sounds somewhat like a super-powered Renaissance Man, but instead of players simply trying to create a pyramid of characters, in Viceroy each of the characters carries an effect and the strength of that effect is determined by the level where it's located in the pyramid.
