New Game Round-up: Young Magicians from Lang and Wilson, Firefly at Gen Con & Reliving Ender's Days at Battle School
Board Game: Arcane Academy
• In 2014, U.S. publisher Th3rd World Studios plans to release Generation Hex by designers Kevin Wilson and Eric M. Lang, a "board game of magical melee for 2-4 players that pits young spellcasters against one another in a duel for honor and prestige. Forge potent magic items and wield wickedly powerful elemental energies to outthink and outmaneuver your opponents in this elegantly simple and quick-to-learn board game that will appeal to families and experienced players alike!"

Aside from the cover artwork and sample card images below, Th3rd World Studios hasn't released much information about the game, but Wilson and Lang will both be at Gen Con 2013 in mid-August to show off and demo the game in the convention's Author's Alley.

Board Game: Firefly: The Game
• Peter Przekop from Gale Force Nine, LLC has confirmed that copies of Firefly: The Game will be available for purchase at Gen Con 2013, which opens August 15. "A limited number of copies will be on hand at the show, be sure to stop by GF9's booth in the Exhibitor’s Hall to get yours!" says Przekop. "Copies of Firefly: The Game purchased at the show will include a resin-cast version of the Alliance Cruiser game piece. This version of the Alliance Cruiser is exclusive to our Gen Con customers."

Board Game: Coal Baron
• U.S. publisher R&R Games will release an English-language version of Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling's Glück Auf under the title "Coal Baron", according to R&R's Frank DiLorenzo. (Note that the eggertspiele/Pegasus version of this game debuting at Spiel 2013 in October includes rules in both English and German.) According to Kricket Robert from R&R, Coal Baron – along with R&R's other Q4 2013 releases: New Haven, Plunder and UnNatural Selection – should be "released in the U.S. shortly before they debut at Essen, so keep an eye out!"

• U.S. publisher Cryptozoic Entertainment has updated the release date for Matt Hyra's The Walking Dead Board Game: The Best Defense to Q4 2013 and notes that the game will be available for demos at its booth during Gen Con 2013. Assassin's Creed: Arena has also received an updated release date of Q4 2013 along with a brief description:

Quote:
In Assassin's Creed: Arena – based on the Assassin's Creed video game series from Ubisoft – players compete to uncover the best targets for assassination, but before you can go in for the kill, sometimes you have to deal with pesky guards as well as your opponents. Players will collect cards and treasure, move guards, and hide within the city of Constantinople until they find their time to strike. Combat is handled through cardplay, and the player who best manages his cards will have the best chance at victory.
• Cryptozoic has also announced a two-player game titled Ender's Game: Battle School that's based on the movie adaptation of the Orson Scott Card novel Ender's Game. Here's an overview of the game:

Quote:
Ender's Game Battle School pits two players against each other in the zero gravity arena of the International Fleet's Battle School, with one player commanding Ender Wiggin's Dragon Team and other player commanding Bonzo Madrid and the Salamander Team. Commander cards for Wiggin and Bonzo come with special abilities, some that help the whole team, and some that help only the commander. Each player moves his team around a zero gravity arena in an attempt to capture the other team's gates or to freeze members of the opposing team with their laser-light guns. The player who first captures all of his opponent's gates or freezes the opposing commander wins.
