New Game Round-up: Villainy from Mayfair Games & Lost Legacy x3 from AEG
Board Game: Villainy
• Days after its announcement of Bedpans & Broomsticks, U.S. publisher Mayfair Games has another title to announce: Villainy, from first-time designer Nicholas Trahan with art by Canadian cartoonist Jay Stephens. (And before you ask, no, there is no parallel Scum standalone game.) Here's a short description of the game, which has a U.S. street date of August 21, 2014:

Quote:
As an aspiring super villain, you are trying to make your mark in the world. In the card-driven character-building game Villainy, you are trying to be the first villain to complete three evil plans and beat Fantastiman, that pesky super-hero who watches over the city day and night. You must carry out crimes, hire minions to aid you in your quest for world domination, and go to work as your alter ego to learn the skills needed and gain the cards required to see your great plans through to their triumphant end.

Villainy features an uncontrolled narrative that unfolds differently every time.

Alderac Entertainment Group had already announced that it was going to release a new version of Seiji Kanai and Hayato Kisaragi's Lost Legacy, which first appeared from Japanese publisher One Draw in early 2013.

Now AEG has revealed its release plans for the game, and things have gotten a bit complicated, as least as far as BGG database management is concerned. Why? Because Lost Legacy included two sets of sixteen cards, each of which could be played on their own, or combined for a large game, or intermingled for variety. AEG plans to release these two sets as individual items — Lost Legacy: The Starship in July 2014 and Lost Legacy: Flying Garden in Q3 2014 — while also releasing a third set, Lost Legacy: Whitegold Spire, in Q4 2014. (Whitegold Spire was not published in the traditional manner by One Draw, but rather released as a promotional item, possibly uncut?, at the Tokyo Game Market.) What are the games? Here's a description of The Starship and Flying Garden:

Quote:
Lost Legacy is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2–4 players. You start the game with one card in hand from a deck of sixteen cards. On a turn, you do the following:

1. Draw: Draw the top card from the deck and add it to your hand.
2. Play: Choose one of the two cards in hand to play and place it face up in front of you.
3. Effect: Carry out the played card's effect, after which the card is considered as discarded.
4. End: If there is at least one card left in the deck, the turn goes to the next player; if not, the investigation phase starts. Using the investigation speed indicated on the card each player has in hand, players take turns guessing which player (whether yourself or someone else) holds the "Lost Legacy" card; this card might also be in the "Ruins", a location that holds one card at the start of the game and possibly acquires more cards during play. The player who guesses correctly wins; if no one finds the Lost Legacy, then everybody loses.
Board Game: Lost Legacy: The Starship

Whitegold Spire plays out differently as players are not trying to find the location of the Lost Legacy once the game ends, but rather have the highest total of cards played once someone finds and reveals the Lost Legacy card.

By combining different Lost Legacy sets (while keeping only a single Lost Legacy card in play), up to six players can compete in a Lost Legacy game at the same time. You can even create your own deck by using the 1 card from deck A, the 2 card from deck B, and so on. All of the cards have different effects on them, so by swapping them out in a bits and pieces, you adjust the powers available to everyone.

For more details on the gameplay of Lost Legacy, and a comparison with Love Letter — a Kanai creation with similar gameplay that inspired this game — here's a video that I shot in May 2013:
