New Game Round-up: Intergalactic Pizza Delivery, Play Through Storytelling & Stereotypical Viking Behavior
Board Game Publisher: Cambridge Games Factory
• On March 22, 2012, I linked to an article in The Boston Globe that mentioned a forthcoming release from Cambridge Games Factory: Kevin Spak and Sam Liberty's Cosmic Pizza. That game now has its own page on BGG and here's the game description:

Quote:
The year is 2151, and the demand for pizza has never been greater.

As a hungry galaxy clamors for thin-crusted Italian delicacies, the little-understood, physics-defying Two Dimensional Drive has been employed to meet the need. By collapsing three-dimensional space down to a two-dimensional matrix, the 2D Drive makes it possible to cross vast distances in seconds. The catch? 2D ships can transport only flat cargo – which makes them perfect for pizza and not much else. (Possible caveat: Cosmic Pancakes.)

In this strange future, a daring pizza pioneer such as yourself can become rich beyond your wildest dreams – but only if you're willing to take on the risks of interstellar, two-dimensional flight. Perhaps the greatest challenge: Mastering the mind-bending reality that is two-dimensional space. Luckily for you, your ship has a tutorial mode.

Cosmic Pizza is a spatial reasoning game for 2-4 players in which players must master an ever-increasing array of dizzying maneuvers; it also boasts variable difficulty levels. If you're a hardcore puzzle fan, you can take on Space Crazy mode, while your kids zip along in the lighter Junior mode.
Board Game: Divided Republic
• U.S. publisher Numbskull Games now expects Alex Bagosy's Divided Republic to be released in late May 2012 as the game is being printed now. The publisher is also working on an expansion for its Popular Front, and co-designers Patrick and Alex Stevens discuss outlines of the expansion in this BGG thread.

NSKN Legendary Games aims to debut its backstabbing party card game Wild Wild West at Spiel 2012 this October. In the game, players earn money from their professions, which they then use to bid on new professions and vote on which buildings are added to the growing Western town. As soon as at least four buildings on a player's hidden objective card are erected in town, the game ends and that player wins.

NSKN's Andrei Novac, designer of Warriors & Traders, says that the publisher also has a space-themed empire-building game in the works. "It will have various resources, new mechanics, a lot of miniature space ships, and a dynamic map made of hexes. Some of the new things this game will bring are simultaneous movement, resources that deplete, and tax on income (yes, it is a bit socialist)," he says. More details about the game, as well as early images, are available in this BGG thread, which included a (now closed) poll about the game's name. Novac says that the finished design will be available for playing at Spiel 2012, with the game due out in early 2013.

• Italian publisher Albe Pavo has announced the Q4 2012 release of Beer & Vikings from designer Matteo Santus. Beer & Vikings is both a standalone game and an expansion for Santus' Sake & Samurai, which was released in Italy in late 2011. In both games, players are trying to be the most drunk warrior at the end of play – but naturally the intake of alcohol reduces your ability to fight well, which means you have a harder time keeping your opponents away from the drinks. Beer & Vikings is due out in Q4 2012.

Albe Pavo also expects to release Winter Tales at the same time. Here's a short description of the game:

Quote:
Following the victory in the Conflict of Autumn, The Regime of Winter has clutched the Land of Fairy Tales in its cold grasp. Fuelled by hate and fear, Winter aims at extinguishing the flame of Love and the light of Hope under a blanket of snow and the never-ending chill of a winter night. In the winding alleys and the small houses desperately clinging to the hillside of Wintertown, frightened Tales move in the shadows, knowing they cannot allow all Hope for the future to be snuffed out by the cold and ready to fight to drive Winter away and let Spring come again.

In Winter Tales, a storytelling board game, players tell the tale of the conflict between the characters of fairy tales, who represent all that is good and hopeful, and the Soldiers of Winter, who incarnate evil and the fierce cold of Winter. Players will ally themselves with one of the warring Factions, controlling characters and fighting for the comeback of Spring or the suffocation of all hope, bringing on an endless Winter.
