Beyond the Edge uses a gaming system called "Evolve/Beyond", an innovative method of allowing you to keep all that you have obtained during each game for the next, allowing you to have individual stories that are specific to your character and which progress independently of your allies.
Beyond the Edge has an easy-to-learn game system in which rules and story develop as you play, allowing casual players to learn as they go. However, for gaming veterans, the faction system of Beyond the Edge creates a dynamic play experience in which the races and groups you ally with not only change your objective, but which special abilities and upgrades you have. What's more, with the "Dry Dock" system, you can even take your ship, captain, and missions and jump into other players' games, creating an ever-evolving gameplay experience.
• Chris Leder's dice game Trainmaker, which first appeared in 2012 from The Game Crafter before being released in a second edition by Grey Gnome Games, has been picked up by Alderac Entertainment Group for release in 2018. "The new edition will feature a graphical refresh, while still incorporating the same great theme and card art by Jason Glover", says Leder. "Beyond the updated look, the AEG version will feature minor gameplay tweaks and updates."
As for that gameplay, on a turn you roll the railroad dice, assemble a train filled with rolling stock and ending with a caboose, then score up to three station cards from your hand based on the results of this train. You can use abilities on completed station cards or your one-shot "switch track" card to manipulate the dice. Score one of each type of station card — or complete your hidden contract card — before anyone else, and you win.
• U.S. publisher Gamewright has teased a new cooperative game from Matt Leacock — Forbidden Sky — with a listed release date of "Summer 2018", so let's assume Q3 2018. Given the heritage of Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert, you already have a sense of what this game might be like. I played a prototype of it in late 2016 and am curious to see whether the game lives up to the potential that was evident in that still-in-progress design. Hold on tight while we wait for more info!
