New Game Round-up: Expand Suburbia, Embrace Vikings & Encounter Bravest Warriors — Someday
Board Game: Suburbia 5★
• Designer/publisher Ted Alspach of Bezier Games has announced a second expansion for his Mensa-award winning Suburbia: Suburbia 5★, which adds fifty new building tiles to the game, five new goal tiles, six new borders (introduced in the first expansion, Suburbia Inc), a new resource to manage (★s), components for a fifth player, and a title that I'll need to cut and paste whenever I want to use it. (For searches, look for "Suburbia 5" and you'll find the page.)

In addition to what's shown below, other building tiles in Suburbia 5★ — all of which are unique, thereby giving players attractions found only in their town — include Swanky Spa, Manmade Volcano, Tiny House Park, Smarty Pants Technical School, Professor BBQ, Hedgren's Subdivision, Ludwig's Castle, and Pharaoh's Favor — the latter of which is a clue toward a future Bezier Games release. Alspach notes that the fifth player color is green "because Friedemann complained". Suburbia 5★ will debut on July 30 at Gen Con 2015. Lookout Spiele, Ystari Games and Arclight will release versions of Suburbia 5★ in, respectively, German, French and Japanese.

Renegade Game Studios is now partnering with Foxtrot Games on the release of Christopher Chung's tile-placement game Lanterns: The Harvest Festival, with this Kickstarted game due out at retail stores in Q2 2015.

• Uli Blennemann has announced that Thomas Spitzer's Haspelknecht, the third title in Spitzer's coal trilogy following Ruhrschifffahrt 1769-1890 and Kohle & Kolonie, will not be released by Spielworxx. I asked Spitzer about the fate of the design, and he told me, "There were some differences with Spielworxx. At the moment I have no new publisher."

• While running through piles of stuff in my office, I ran across a mention in a gaming magazine of Encounters: Bravest Warriors from Brian Knudson and Catalyst Game Labs, something that showed up in two versions (red and blue) at Gen Con 2014 but was apparently still not available on the retail market. What was up with that? I contacted Catalyst, and Randall Bills said that the games at Gen Con were print-on-demand copies meant to serve as a prerelease for the published version that will be out in mid-2015.

• Another title coming from Catalyst is Jarl: The Vikings Tile-Laying Game, which is themed on the Vikings television show on the History Channel with gameplay coming from The Duke. Here's an overview of this design, which is due out Q2 2015:

Quote:
In the long winters between raiding seasons, warriors keep their intellect sharp through games of wits and chance. Ragnar, Rollo, Floki and even the Earl challenge each other to this game of stone placement filled with tactics and subtle maneuvering for victory.

In Jarl: The Vikings Tile-Laying Game, players move their warriors (tiles) around the board and flip them over after each move. Each tile's side shows a different movement profile. If you end your movement in a square occupied by an opponent's tile, you capture that tile. Capture your opponent's Jarl to win!
Catalyst also has a second Vikings-based title in the works — Vikings: The Board Game — with that title due out following the release of Jarl. Here's what I know so far:

Quote:
Vikings: The Board Game is a strategy game of exploration and raiding that allows players to embrace their inner Viking.

Each winter in the game, players will scheme to acquire appropriate resources while convincing heroes such as Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha, Rollo and Floki to support them as they put their longships in the water to raid each summer. Plunder treasures and foreign resources across modular tiles that ensure a different game each time you play, while completing offers to the Seer will ultimately lead a player to victory!
