• Polish publisher Portal Games has announced a 2023 release date for Thorgal: The Board Game, an adaptation of the long-lived comic series that started in Tintin magazine in 1977 and that continues to be published today, with the work having been collected in dozens of volumes.

Thorgal: The Board Game, which is a co-operative storybook adventure game for 1-4 players, is from designers Joanna Kijanka, Jan Maurycy Święcicki, and Rafał Szyma, and Portal anticipates crowdfunding the game on Gamefound starting in May 2022. Here's an overview of the game from the publisher:
Quote:
In Thorgal: The Board Game, players take on the roles of Thorgal, his wife Aaricia, their son Jolan, and Kriss —a deadly female warrior — and go on a series of adventures.

The game consists of ten stand-alone scenarios, each taking roughly 90-120 minutes of play. Scenarios neither form a campaign nor have any legacy features, so they can be played by different playgroups and over an extended period of time.

Thorgal: The Board Game comes with a book of maps. Each scenario is played on a different map that players explore while fulfilling scenario goals and promises completely different adventures, hidden opportunities, and vivid characters. Players are free to choose whether they travel in one group or split to cover more areas at the same time. They also perform side quests that might help them win a scenario.

Another important feature in the game is the storybook that contains narrative descriptions of the encounters that characters make in each scenario. The adventures described in the book are specific to each scenario and character, yet a lot of them are randomized within a scenario, allowing for repeated play. Characters' morality and past decisions all play an important role in how the encounters are resolved.

On each turn, the active player chooses an action to be performed by the entire group, with the active player executing its full version, and all passive players performing its weaker version, regardless of their location on the map. This creates an interesting decision space and makes each turn important for everyone at the table.

Another important mechanism involves character development. Their abilities are upgraded during gameplay and negatively affected by wounds suffered in fighting. Characters gather resources and craft objects to help them survive in the dangerous world and gain companions they meet on the way.
• In other adaptation news, U.S. publisher Level 99 Games has announced a March 29, 2022 launch date on Kickstarter for Dead by Daylight: The Board Game, with design by company owner D. Brad Talton, Jr..

Board Game: Dead by Daylight: The Board Game

The asymmetric online game Dead by Daylight debuted in 2016 from Behaviour Interactive, and the tabletop design is meant to emulate its setting and gameplay:
Quote:
In Dead by Daylight: The Board Game, a team of four resourceful survivors face off against a supernatural killer in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse.

As a survivor, explore the trial grounds, discover props, and utilize your unique perks as you work to uncover and repair generators. Repair four generators and open the exit games to escape and win!

As a killer, hunt down the survivors, wound them, and place them on sacrificial hooks to summon a sinister force. With enough sacrifices, you are able to appease The Entity and win!
If you haven't played the game, you might think that "place them on sacrificial hooks" is metaphorical, but this promotional image from Level 99 Games suggests otherwise:

Note, however, that hooks appear to be included only in the collector's edition of the game. Level 99 notes that the standard edition of the game will carry a US$50 MSRP and include 6 killers, 7 survivors, and 2 maps, whereas the collector's edition will have 16 killers, 17 survivors, and 4 maps for US$100. From the press release:
Quote:
The featured Survivors and Killers are drawn from the original cast of Dead by Daylight, and include the complete roster of characters up through the All-Kill DLC, which was released in March of 2021.

Both editions include everything needed to play, including highly detailed miniatures of the Survivors and Killers. The collector's edition includes additional miniatures, such as miniature hooks upon which the Killer can sacrifice their victims, and miniature generators upon which the Survivors can display their progress towards escape.

"As fans of the original video game, we worked hard to capture the tension between the Survivors and the Killer on every turn," says D. Brad Talton Jr, the designer behind the game. "The moment when you commit to your move and then have to hold your breath while the Killer makes their play — to me that's the essence of Dead by Daylight."
Level 99 Games expects to have both versions of the game out before the end of October 2022.
