Spiel 2015 Preview: Kabuki, or Memory Masked

Spiel 2015 Preview: Kabuki, or Memory Masked
Board Game: Kabuki
Games that have a memory element to them can be tolerated by most players because even if they don't excel at memorizing this or that, they can focus on other aspects of the design while playing and still have a shot at winning.

Memory games, on the other hand, face a stiff wall of "No!" from many players because the game feels like an all-or-nothing affair: You either remember things and win, or you don't and lose. Hope S. Hwang's Kabuki from IELLO falls into the category of pure memory game, with players trying to remember which actors have had their faces painted in which ways.

Thus, should you introduce Kabuki to others, be prepared for them to respond, "Noh!"
