Simulate Northern Ireland Conflict, Defeat the Reich, and Fight in the Spanish Civil War and Guadalcanal
• Sometimes seeing a game's box cover image instantly floods my mind with curiosity, and I have to know what it's all about. Such is the case with The Troubles: Shadow War in Northern Ireland 1964-1998, a 2-6 player card-driven, conflict simulation game from designer Hugh O'Donnell and Compass Games.

The Troubles is not slated to release until 2023, but is available for pre-order on the Compass Games website, and the game plays in 4-6 hours as described below by the publisher:
Quote:
The Troubles depicts the Paramilitary and Security Force conflict that gripped Northern Ireland for almost four decades between 1964 and 1998. Equally foregrounded are the national and international political affairs that saw the British Army undertake its longest deployment in its military history — on its own streets.

Each player takes the role of a faction seeking to guide Northern Irish affairs, whether it is political, paramilitarily, or through martial law: the British Forces (including the UDR), the Royal Ulster Constabulary (the RUC was the Government security force), the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), the Loyalist Paramilitaries (LOY), and the Nationalist (NAT) or Unionist (UNI) politicians.

Board Game: The Troubles: Shadow War in Northern Ireland 1964-1998

The game encompasses the USA's involvement in the international aid and arms deals that supported the IRA; facilitates the exportation of terror to the streets of Great Britain and Europe; depicts the complex relationship that existed between the Republic of Ireland, Britain, and its northern neighbor. And it provides developments, a feature that mirrors the increasing technological and intelligence-led advancements on both sides.

Each faction may use primary and secondary actions analogous to its real world counterparts, or may choose from the 259 rich narrative cards, divided into eight key epochs in Northern Ireland's recent history.
Downfall: Conquest of the Third Reich, 1942-1945 is one of the latest P500 additions from GMT Games, and it's designed by the late Chad Jensen, who had yet to complete it before his unfortunate passing in 2019. Thankfully, John H. Butterfield, with Kai Jensen's assistance, was able to pick up where Chad left off, adding his own expertise to push Downfall to the finish line.

Downfall is a two-player, World War II game that plays in 2-6 hours. Per GMT's website, Chad Jensen researched and experimented with Downfall over a ten-year period, taking inspiration from classic strategic WWII games and incorporating ideas from his Fighting Formations initiative system to arrive at the four-faction, two-front design approach.

Here's a high-level overview of what you can expect:
Quote:
Downfall is a two-player game on the conquest of the Third Reich in World War II. One player controls the Western Allies and the other the Soviet Union in their joint effort to destroy the Axis. Though the two players share the goal of defeating the Reich, each seeks a victory that favors their dominance in post-war Europe. To this end, each player controls two factions:

____• The Western player commands the Western Allies faction and the OKH faction, that is the German and minor Axis armies battling the Soviet Union in the east (Oberkommando des Heeres).

____• The Soviet player commands the Soviet faction and the OKW faction, that is the German and Italian armies facing the Western allies in the west (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht).

Board Game: Downfall: Conquest of the Third Reich, 1942-1945

Gameplay is driven by Downfall's innovative initiative track. The faction with the initiative chooses an order, pays its initiative cost by advancing their marker along the track, and performs the order. Then, the faction with the initiative (based on the updated positions of the markers) chooses the next order. There is no set sequence of play; initiative expenditures determine who goes next. The progress of faction markers along the track also trigger strategic events, changes in weather, and advancement of game turns.
Help Arrives! is a new two-player Spanish Civil War game in the War Storm series from designer Nicolás Eskubi and Spanish publisher Draco Ideas. Help Arrives! plays in two hours and was originally available on Kickstarter (KS link), but is now available for retail pre-order.

Here's an overview of the history it covers and how it plays, as described by the publisher:
Quote:
On 18 July 1936, various generals in the Spanish army rose up against the government of the Second Republic. The failure of the coup as it had been originally planned gave way to a civil conflict between the defenders of the democratic government and the backers of the military coup. Machado's two Spain's fought each other for nearly three years in a battle which reflected the political and social tensions affecting the world at that time.

The opposing armies were very different: on one hand, the Republican army possessed a limited number of professional soldiers and many popular militias belonging to political parties and labor unions. To this were added the International Brigades, formed from foreign volunteers of diverse origin; a fighting force which was highly motivated, but poorly coordinated and typically poorly organized. On the other hand, Franco's army had most of the professional military, along with Carlist and fascist militias, many native Moroccan troops, and the volunteers of the Condor Legion and the Corpo Trupe Voluntarie, sent by Hitler and Mussolini, respectively.

From a military point of view, the Spanish Civil War presaged the global conflict that would soon erupt. In the mid-1930s, military high commands from all over the globe theorized on the possibilities of motorized armies and "lightning war". Both Nazis and Soviets rehearsed armored tactics in Spain and tested various types of weapons. In addition, the importance that air superiority would have on all later conflicts was made clear. All of these elements make the Spanish Civil War a fascinating conflict from an historical point of view and with regard to military strategy.

Board Game: Help Arrives!

Help Arrives![ (HA) is a standalone game in the War Storms series that's 100% compatible with A las Barricadas! including the international help received by the Nationalist and Republican as well as many other units that fought on both sides during the SCW: The International Brigades, the Italian Corpo Troppe Volontarie (C.T.V.)

HA, while utilizing "PTH" base rules, incorporates new and adapted rules and additions for this new title. The WSS promises many hours of fierce fighting between the infantry, tanks, artillery and aircraft belonging to the armies enveloped in this conflict. HA has a moderate complexity with good solitaire suitability. The system emphasizes the role of officers. Officers can activate units, coordinate with other officers and their units, call for artillery support, air support, influence moral checks, coordinate assaults, and much more.
Worthington Publishing is launching a Kickstarter campaign on September 4, 2021 for Band of Brothers: Old Breed South Pacific, from designers Dean Halley (Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal – Pacific Ocean 1942) and Jim Krohn (Space Empires 4x, Talon).

Band of Brothers: Old Breed South Pacific plays with 1–2 players in 90 minutes and is the newest addition to the Band of Brothers squad-level tactical game series. Here's a brief overview from the publisher of what you can expect gameplay wise:
Quote:
Band of Brothers: Old Breed South Pacific is a fast-playing game of squad level combat in WWII. It covers the exploits of the U.S. First Marine Division in the battles for Guadalcanal. The rules are very simple (no combat charts are needed) with few exceptions to remember, yet the game is meant to be all encompassing and will include infantry, tanks, and artillery.

Based on years of research, the game system uses a unique suppression mechanism. There are no longer two unique states for a unit, but varying degrees of suppression. This allows suppression to accumulate from multiple fire sources and means that the unit will not take a morale check until it is asked to do something. You will never know for sure how your units will respond until they are needed.

Board Game: Band of Brothers: Old Breed South Pacific

Although casualties can be caused by artillery and heavy weapons (which makes them prime battlefield targets), squads will never cause significant casualties shooting at range at dug-in, first-line troops. Their goal is to fire and maneuver. Sections of the enemy force must be pinned down and eliminated from up close. The system itself forces this realistic play. In a similar fashion, the system rewards you for spreading your troops out and other realistic game play.

Old Breed South Pacific is a standalone game, but is also part of a growing series of tactical games: Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles is the first in the series and follows the U.S. 101st Airborne Division; Band of Brothers: Ghost Panzer is the second in the series and follows the German 11th Panzer Division; and Band of Brothers: Texas Arrows is a dependent expansion that follows the U.S. 36th Infantry Division.
