• WizKids has been releasing games based on Marvel superhero characters for years, with 2014's Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men being the first release in its long-lived Dice Masters series, for example.
In 2022, the publisher is adding three more Marvel titles to its line-up, with two of them being remixes of other designs. Perhaps in a nod to this approach, one of the games is titled Marvel: Remix, with this being a Marvel-based version of Bruce Glassco's Fantasy Realms.
As in that earlier game, you craft a hand of cards over the course of play, with cards scoring points based on everything else that you have in hand. Some cards transform under certain conditions, with you flipping Bruce Banner to become Hulk or Jean Grey to become Phoenix. If I recall correctly, you must have at least one villain in hand in order to win, but villains whack your score unless meet the condition shown on them, e.g. you lose 20 points from Sentinels unless you have at least two mutants. Effectively, you're telling a mini-Marvel story from the cards in hand — which villain is causing trouble and who tried to stop them.
WizKids lists Marvel: Remix as a July 2022 release on its website, despite what the image shows. A running theme of GAMA Expo was that every release date given had a ±3 month window attached to it. Maybe production would flow unexpectedly well, and a publisher wouldn't need the built-in buffer period, but more likely a ship will spin in circles and a U.S. customs will say, "Mmmmm, nah" and push a release date out.
• Marvel: Rock Paper Heroes – Enter the Danger Room is a reimplementation of 2016's Dungeons & Dragons: Rock Paper Wizard from designers Josh Cappel, Jay Cormier, and Sen-Foong Lim. Each of the 2-6 players represents one of eight mutants — each with a unique hand gesture — and you use your gesture and others to try to best everyone else in the Danger Room.
WizKids now shows this title as a June 2022 release.
• The third Marvel-based title had only a cover image and the barest of info — Marvel: Age of Heroes, from Lords of Waterdeep co-designer Rodney Thompson. Well, a mock-up cover image given that a watercolor take on the X-Men looks nice, but doesn't seem to fit the Marvel mold. The US$70 price tag suggests a large-scale game, and we'll see whether the October 2022 release date holds.
• Speaking of Fantasy Realms, WizKids displayed Fantasy Realms: Deluxe Edition, which appears to be simply a packaging of the FR base game, the 2021 Cursed Hoard expansion, and existing promo cards. No release date was listed, but if you've introduced someone to FR, maybe this will be the holiday present for them.
• Sidereal Confluence: Bifurcation is an expansion for TauCeti Deichmann's 2017 Sidereal Confluence that matches the graphics of the 2020 "Remastered Edition" of the base game, although WizKids notes that the low number of randomized elements should allow for its use with the original edition. From the publisher:
• In 2014, Z-Man Games released an English-language version of Tragedy Looper from Japanese designer BakaFire, with this being a scenario-based deduction game in which players would loop back in time through a scenario to attempt to determine why a tragedy occurred and how to prevent it.
In 2022, WizKids is bringing this game back on the market under the name Tragedy Looper: New Tragedies. Z-Man Games had released two expansions — Midnight Circle in 2015 and Cosmic Evil in 2016 — but BakaFire had released nine expansions for the game through his own BakaFire Party brand, so plenty more material remains available for translation.
As you can tell from the mock-up back cover shown below, this item is still far from release, but now it's on your radar and you can loop back later for more info...
• WizKids displayed an expansion for Rob Heinsoo's Three-Dragon Ante: Legendary Edition, but despite the depicted April 2022 release date being upon us in a few days, I've seen no retailer listings or other information for Giants War, so we'll leave it a question mark for now.
• For years, WizKids has released Dungeons & Dragons miniatures, in addition to releasing standalone games in the D&D universe, such as 2021's Dungeons & Dragons: Ghosts of Saltmarsh, and now it seems to be combining the two lines in Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught. Here's the pitch from the publisher:
In more detail, Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught is a scenario-based combat game in which you collect treasure, level up, and bring powerful abilities to bear using dice rolls, upgrade cards, and the new combat dial card system to keep track of the action.
The core set of Onslaught includes material for two players, including twelve characters from two factions (Harpers and Zhentarim) and a horde of monsters — 21 pre-painted figures in all.
