• Dutch publisher Quined Games has released an overview of its late 2014 releases, so you can likely expect to find them at Spiel 2014 in October, if you don't happen to be passing through The Netherlands anytime soon.
Of most interest to people will be Massilia from designer Alain Epron, which will be (unlucky?) title #13 in the Quined Masterprint Series. Epron and his publishing house Krok Nik Douil Editions funded an edition of Massilia through Ulule in early 2012, but then failed to deliver the game. In a press release announcing this title, Quined included this note:
Quote:
Quined was not involved in this attempt to publish the game; this was solely done by the former publishing company of the designer of the game. The designer of the game has decided that those who have signed up for this game and did not get a refund will receive a free copy of the new Quined version of the game. Quined and the designer cooperate to realize this. Further details will be published later on the websites of Quined and BoardGameGeek.
There will be a small expansion and a goodie available for those who preorder the game before Spiel 2014. The backers of the game will also receive both the goodie and the expansion.
So...success? As for the gameplay in Massilia, an overview:
Quote:
Massilia the beautiful – its strategic location on the Mediterranean has made it an important trading port of the Roman Empire, bringing prosperity to the city. Its market has become one of the most popular on the coast, and merchants are fighting to be able to install their stalls. Competition is tough to make a fortune, especially since the customer is demanding. This requires having well-stocked stalls to attract the wealthy customers and increase its reputation. But be careful not to incur the wrath of the consul as this could cost you. However, you can always count on the gods and goddesses to give you a boost, with, of course, some offerings. And yes, everything is paid in this world ...
In Massilia, each player will be able to use different colored dice to perform actions. There are four different colors corresponding to four different actions. On his turn, a player can choose a die and perform the corresponding action: Buy goods at the port, move a client or the consul on the market, make offerings to divinities to recover bonuses (cards), and buy reputation. The value of the die shows the number of times that the action may be made. The goal is to obtain the highest reputation at the end of the day by setting up stalls on the market to sell goods at the best price that the player will have bought in port.
• Not content to add one new release to its Masterprint Series, Quined will also release title #14: The Golden Ages from Luigi Ferrini. Details on the gameplay are slim for now:
Quote:
In The Golden Ages, you lead your civilizations through history. The game lasts four different eras, during which you develop technologies, create fine arts, erect buildings, and build wonders. You'll send explorers to discover the continents, found cities in distant lands, and send your soldiers into battles.
Will you succeed in evolving your civilization through history, overwhelming your opponents on the way to glory?
• Designer Heinrich Glumpler has announced the next release from his Edition Erlkönig, with the game currently coming in two versions. Here's an overview of his not-really-a-word-game Find...:
Quote:
Find... consists of 36 tiles, with each tile having one letter on it. Shuffle the tiles face down, then lay them out in a 6x6 pattern. Players take turns revealing one tile and putting it back in place in the grid, then trying to spell out the target word by finding a chain of letters in order to win. Alternatively, a player can claim that the target word can't be found in the grid, and if this proves to be true, then this player wins.
Two games exist that include the target word in their title — Find...den MÖRDER and Find...die LIEBE — and while the target words are German, the game itself has no language specific text.
• Polis publisher Asylum Games has another history-based game in the works, one that also references a golden age, albeit one of a very specific time period. Here's a description of Gonzo Bríos' 15 Dias: The Spanish Golden Age:
Quote:
On March 31st, 1621, King Philip III of Spain, also known as Philip the Pious, passed away. He had rarely acted as a true ruler, having entrusted all authority to his favorite, the Duke of Lerma. When the young prince Philip IV succeeded to the throne, a new competitor arrived at court, the power-hungry Count of Olivares. Although the Duke of Lerma had been compelled to leave the court, after falling from favor and being accused of massive corruption by his own son, his family hoped to hold on to power at any cost...
15 Días: The Spanish Golden Age is set in this context of backstabbing, treachery and palace intrigues. Who will become the new "Valido"? Would you betray your own next-of-kin to obtain the grace of the King? All of this, and much more awaits you in 15 Días: The Spanish Golden Age, a card game full of history and intrigue, no regrets, betrayal, and above all ambition.
