New Game Round-up: New Prisoners for Alcatraz, Cows on Skis & 2012 Titles Still in the Pipeline

New Game Round-up: New Prisoners for Alcatraz, Cows on Skis & 2012 Titles Still in the Pipeline
Board Game: Ginkgopolis
Board Game: HomeStretch
• With the calendar rolling over to 2013, let's look at a list of titles previously announced as December 2012 releases in the U.S., whether from the publisher or U.S. distributors. This list isn't comprehensive, but it does highlight titles you're likely to see on U.S. gamestore shelves in early 2013 if they're not already there:

-----Ginkgopolis and The Ladies of Troyes from Z-Man Games (although the titles are available in Europe)
-----Tentacle Bento from Soda Pop Miniatures (although the game is available direct from the publisher)
-----Drum Roll, Briefcase and Among the Stars from Artipia Games (which are available in Europe and are being distributed in the U.S. by Alliance Game Distributors)
-----Polis: Fight for the Hegemony from Asylum Games (being another Alliance import of a European release)
-----Noblemen from Tasty Minstrel Games (although the Pegasus Spiele edition has been out since Spiel 2012 in October and a few stores got TMG copies right at the end of December)
-----A Few Acres of Snow, second edition, from Asmodee (same as Noblemen in that I see it for sale on one site but not many others)
-----• The many new releases from Rio Grande Games, which are listed in this BGG News post, have also reached one or two online retailers but are not yet widely available
-----HomeStretch, Qin, Spectaculum, AttrAction and Hey, Froggy! from R&R Games (yet more games that have supposedly reached at least one distributor in late December without showing up for sale any place that I can see)
-----Tokaido from Funforge

I'm sure plenty more titles belong on this list, not to mention titles due out in Europe that have yet to appear for sale there. I plan to do a massive clean-up on Gone Cardboard in the near future to bring it up to date and clear out the deadwood, the already published wood, and whatever other types of wood shouldn't be on the list.

Board Game: MOW
• Rabid collector of obscure games? You now have a new challenge. French gaming site Tric Trac reports that Bruno Cathala's Mow is being released in a skiing-themed edition titled Zou from the Grand Massif ski resort. From the post, this version appears the same as the original game for 2-5 players published by Hurrican in 2008, but with new artwork (skiers replacing cows, snowballs replacing flies, etc.). Also, this version is apparently a gift item for those who purchase a travel package from one of the Grand Massif resorts. Time to schedule a winter vacation in France?

Board Game: Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game
• U.S. publisher Atlas Games has announced that the third edition of its storytelling game Once Upon a Time has been licensed to Kaissa Chess & Games for a Greek edition as well as a new French edition from Asmodee. (I think six is the most links I've had in a sentence of this length. No-Prize award, please!)

• Polish publisher Kuźnia Gier is working on a second expansion for Alcatraz: The Scapegoat, and if you look the part and present yourself as a model prisoner, you could find yourself in prison along with the rest of the inmates. How? Kuźnia Gier is holding a popularity contest in which users are invited to use this template to create a customized prisoner sheet, then email it to Piotr Zuchowski ([email protected]). From the press release: "Your work may be digital or traditional painting, a black/white sketch, or even a photograph – just put it in the template where the original prisoners were and send it!" After January 2013, the publisher will post the three best images on its Facebook page, and the prisoner who receives the most "like"s will end up in the game.

Board Game: Rialto
Board Game: Il Vecchio
• In the category of "news that you might have already heard but which has yet to be posted on BGGN because it arrived while I was moving" is word of two European game releases that will be released by Tasty Minstrel Games in the U.S. The games are Rüdiger Dorn's Il Vecchio, which Pegasus Spiele/Hall Games released in an English/German edition in Europe in October 2012, and Stefan Feld's Rialto, which Pegasus plans to release in January 2013. The anticipated release dates for the TMG versions are February 2013 for Il Vecchio and March/April 2013 for Rialto.

In a newsletter announcing these titles, TMG's Michael Mindes noted that the TMG editions of Noblemen and Village sold out from the publisher within days (which means that all the available copies are in the distribution system and no more will be forthcoming until TMG reprints the titles, which could take months). Thus, Mindes encourages people interested in either or both of these games to preorder from stores in order for them to have time to preorder from distributors. Quite a change from the direct discounted sales Mindes conducted with Noblemen and Village, but when you're trying to get back into the standard distribution network – which Mindes and TMG are doing following the end of its distribution relationship with Game Salute – pushing preorders makes good sense.

Of course in many cases it makes good sense to preorder no matter which publisher is releasing which game. As I've stressed a number of times on BGN and BGG News, most recently in an overview of the 2012 NY Toy Fair, preorders from customers drive stores to order games they might otherwise overlook, which in turn drives distributors to order in greater quantities from publishers, which can in turn increase print runs and long-term availability. For titles you're iffy on or are waiting to read reviews about, sure, hold off on the preorder, but if you're, say, a Feld fanatic or know you're definitely getting The Next Awesome Game from a specific publisher, preorders are the way to go.
