Board Game: Saqqara
• Dutch publisher White Goblin Games has announced the second and third of its Spiel 2012 releases on its Facebook page. One of those titles – Jose Antonio Rivero's Expedition: Congo River 1884 – was already known as the BGG listing has been around for a while, but the other title is a new one: Saqqara from designer Shem Phillips. Here's an overview of the game:

Quote:
Welcome to Saqqara (Egypt), the date is about 2125 BC, just before the Heracleopolis revolt.

Set in ancient Egypt in a time of chaos and revolts, Saqqara is a game with lots of bluffing, speculation and development for 2-5 players. The players assume the role of nomarch in ancient Egypt and attempt to influence the country's government and economy. They sent merchants to the market to collect goods to develop their province, recruit workers to build pyramids, and claim fertile land on the banks of the Nile. The player who succeeds in developing his province best by cunningly making use of the privileges of the pyramids and claiming a large area on the banks of the Nile wins the game and becomes Egypt's new leader.

Watch out for beggars, thiefs and sneaky bluffing nomarchs from other provinces. They want the same as you: power over Egypt.
Board Game: Get Bit!
• U.S. publisher Mayday Games has announced a new "tin box" edition of Dave Chalker's Get Bit! that will use the packaging of Bombyx' French version of the game, while adding a pirate theme to the cards and playing pieces. Seth Hiatt at Mayday expects to have this edition out in December 2012.

• ICv2 has posted news of another Quarriors! expansion from WizKids titled Quest of the Qladiator. According to ICv2, this expansion will have 40 new dice and 26 new cards, wit six new creature types and two new spell types.

Board Game: Heimlich & Co.
• In "old" news, German publisher AMIGO Spiel released a new version of Wolfgang Kramer's Heimlich & Co in May 2012, and in addition to the graphics overhaul to make it match modern AMIGO releases, the game now includes a "Top Secret" variant that use 26 Top Secret cards added to the game for this purpose. No clue as to what changes in the game play, but Kramer notes on his website that the variant results in a much shorter playing time.

• On their Inspiration to Publication blog, designers Jay Cormier and Sen-Foong Lim announced that they've signed a deal with Queen Games for their pirate-themed design "Swashbucklers". Well, almost signed anyway. As noted in the announcement: "Our third game is 99% of the way to being signed..." Keep counting those chickens, boys!

Board Game Publisher: dV Giochi
• Italian publisher dV Giochi has announced its release plans for late 2012, with two titles debuting at Spiel 2012, being released in Europe in late October 2012, and appearing in the U.S. around December 2012 due to travel across that annoying ocean that prohibits easy movement between Europe and North America. The first title is Bang! 10th Anniversary, the title bearing witness to the debut of Emiliano Sciarra's Bang! in 2002. Here's a summary of what's included in the box:

Quote:
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the best-selling Bang!, dV Giochi will present this limited edition version. Bang! 10th Anniversary is packaged in a metal box and includes all the Bang! playing cards, plus a selection of popular characters – the "Most Wanted", if you will – from all the released expansions of Bang!. In addition, the game will feature deluxe components such as wooden bullets and maxi-sized player boards. To top it all off, this edition will include three previously unpublished characters and a brand new player board!
To answer the immediate question that some will have, yes, this game has a new listing in the BGG database. Why? Because it bears a different name than the original game and it contains material not previously published. With something like Carcassonne Big Box, you can add that name as a new version and list everything included in it previously and link to those various items in the database; that's not the case here. I realize that this system is not ideal, but it's the one we have now and if circumstances later merit a merge of this with the base game, we'll do so at the time.

The second item is also from Emiliano Sciarra, and it puts a new spin on a familiar game:

Quote:
Samurai Sword is a new game based on the proven Bang! mechanisms and set in feudal Japan. In this game, the familiar features of Bang! are enhanced by more dynamic and fast-paced game play, and thanks to a new scoring system – based on honor points and resilience points – there is no player elimination. Everybody gets to fight to the very end! Also, weapons and attacks are fused into a single card.

Samurai Sword will be published in co-operation with the Japanese publisher Hobby Japan.
Rules for both titles will be published on the dV Giochi website in late September 2012. Update, Aug. 3: While the game was listed on the press release as "BANG! Samurai Sword" and that's how I initially announced the game, the publisher has clarified that "BANG!" is to identify the family history and is not part of the game name.
