New Game Round-up: Fantasy Flight Rediscovers Borderlands and Brings Ruin to Descent; Privateer Press Expands Level 7, Then Expands It Again
Board Game: Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) – Labyrinth of Ruin
• U.S. publisher Fantasy Flight Games has announced a second expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark (second edition) titled Labyrinth of Ruin that's due out Q2 2013 with a MSRP of $60. Here's an overview of what's in the box:

Quote:
Set in a previously unexplored region of Terrinoth, Labyrinth of Ruin takes players on a riveting journey to the broken remains of a forgotten city. Throughout the many quests included in this expansion, heroes will enlist the aid of unique allies in their mission to stop the evil overlord.

The comprehensive campaign in Labyrinth of Ruin features nineteen narratively rich quests. While they can be enjoyed as standalone experiences, these engaging adventures were designed with campaign play in mind, telling the story of an enigmatic sorceress's vile plot to bring darkness to the world; as with the base game's campaign, "The Shadow Rune", Labyrinth of Ruin uses a clever plot system that reacts to players' successes and failures. With each successfully completed quest, either the heroes or the overlord will grow in power...leading up to a gripping showdown in the campaign's finale!

A new Overlord deck in Labyrinth of Ruin provides an alternative to the core game's fifteen basic Overlord cards, while cunning new monsters add their strength to the forces of evil. Hero players benefit from the addition of four brave new characters and four versatile new classes: Beastmaster, Treasure Hunter, Hexer, and Apothecary. All of this – along with new Travel Event cards, Condition cards, Shop Item cards, and two green power dice – ensure even greater customization and replayability than ever before!
Board Game: Gearworld: The Borderlands
• FFG has also announced the Q2 2013 release of Gearworld: The Borderlands, a new version of the Eon board game Borderlands from designers Bill Eberle, Jack Kittredge and Peter Olotka. Here's an overview of the game:

Quote:
The Sky People retreated above the clouds and left the Borderlands to crumble and decay. The old machines are rusted and broken and the scavengers of Gearworld live off scraps from the past and refuse from the Sky People's flying cities. The scavengers' only hope for a better life is to build great towering skyworks and gain the favor of the World Above, allowing them to outlast and outlive their rival scavenger gangs. In the Borderlands, survival is an exception.

Gearworld: The Borderlands is a game of conquest and survival in a post-apocalyptic world for 2-4 players. Seize territory, marshal resources and defend yourself from your rivals. Reclaim the machines of old to build powerful weapons and enormous skyworks. Can you forge a new future from the rusted remnants of the past?
The announcement mentions that this new version "has streamlined the original rules and re-imagined the game's setting while retaining its predecessor's spirit and core mechanics". More info about the game play in the announcement linked to above and the game pages on the FFG website.

Board Game: Winter Tales
• Jocularis, co-designer of the 2012 Albe Pavo/Raven Distribution release Winter Tales, notes on BGG that the Italian publishers "have signed a good agreement with a great boardgame company in the U.S." with the publisher to be named later once agreements have been signed for versions in other languages.

Board Game: Level 7 [Escape]: Lockdown
• U.S. publisher Privateer Press has announced two extensions for its LEVEL 7 world, starting with the expected June 2013 release of LEVEL 7 [ESCAPE]: Lockdown, an expansion for Will Schoonover's LEVEL 7 [ESCAPE] that adds "new enemies, room tiles, and rules along with five new scenarios" to the base game.

The second item, a standalone game due out Q4 2013, is LEVEL 7 [Omega Protocol], which has a decent description on the BGG game page, in addition to a teaser video from the publisher:

Quote:
LEVEL 7 [Omega Protocol] picks up right where LEVEL 7 [ESCAPE] left off. The Subterra Bravo facility has been thrown into chaos through the players actions in [ESCAPE], and now the government has sent in a top-secret, highly-trained special forces unit to shut down the facility and eliminate everything remaining in the base.

In [Omega Protocol], one player takes on the role of the Overseer while two to five other players take on the role of the elite Special Ops team. The Overseer's role in the game is to control all of the alien denizens and challenges the players face throughout the game. The players are trying to achieve specific scenario-based objectives by exploring a map that's laid out at the start and fighting off the hordes of aliens that the Overseer sends their way.

Gameplay is based around adrenalin, which is the currency that the soldier players use to perform actions. They generate adrenaline to do things such as move, attack, and perform special actions like activating an objective space. That generation also has a negative effect for them, as that adrenalin transfers to the Overseer player, who then uses it to spawn aliens, create new threats, and hurt the soldiers' chance of success during the scenario. The more actions the Special Ops players take, the more resources the Overseer player has to work with.

Characters in [Omega Protocol] are represented by miniatures, and each Special Ops and alien character has different attributes, powers, and customizable skills and equipment.
