New Game Round-up: Dorn Enlists Hobbits, Lehmann Reclaims The City & Mayer Unleashes Shinobi Clans
Board Game: The Hobbit: Enchanted Gold
Rüdiger Dorn's Istanbul, released in Germany in March 2014, is getting buzz as a possible Kennerspiel des Jahres nominee — and I'll post a detailed overview of that game on BGGN soon — but that title isn't the only one coming from Dorn this year. Kosmos has released the family game Faulpelz, alea is prepping the Las Vegas Plus expansion, and German publisher/distributor Heidelberger Spieleverlag has now announced the Q3 2014 release of Der Hobbit: Smaugs Schatz, which is apparently based on the book, not the Peter Jackson trilogy, but the gameplay description seems as equally fanciful an adaptation as Jackson's:

Quote:
Bilbo and the dwarves set out to slay Smaug, but the path to the dragon's refuge is beset with peril!

In the game Der Hobbit: Smaugs Schatz, players gain gems through skillful play of their cards, and with combinations of different colored gems, they can overcome opponents and pave the way to Smaug. Whoever defeats the most foes, and thus garners the most victory points, wins.
And the Heidelberger announcement includes this curious wording: "Der Hobbit: Smaugs Schatz ist noch in diesem Jahr in deutscher Version zu erwarten," with me wondering why it would stress "in deutscher Version" unless a non-deutscher version were also in the offing. We'll see...

Board Game: The City
• In the category of "games that shoulda been", designer Tom Lehmann notes on BGG that he's recovered "most of the rights" to his 2011 card game The City and has recently spoken to a pair of (presumably U.S.) publishers about releasing the game in English. Says Lehmann: "One of the publishers wants the game expanded into a larger and different game; the other is interested in republishing it as is, but hasn't made a final decision yet. These things take time."

• The new edition of Alex Randolph's Die Heisse Schlacht am Kalten Buffet due out for Spiel 2014 in October from franjos will be titled Mahé, after the largest island in the Republic of Seychelles, and in the game players are turtles who swim around the island trying to lay their eggs at the beach to receive points for doing a good job. Mahé will allow for up to seven players, with art by Klemens Franz and wooden stacking turtles reminiscent of the pigs from Randolph's Rüsselbande:

Board Game: Shinobi Clans
Jürgen Mayer's Shinobi Clans, which was available at Gen Con 2013 in a fifty-copy POD edition from Posthuman Studios, is at the printer and should be available at retail outlets by the end of Q2 2014. Here's an overview of that game:

Quote:
As a ruthless and cunning shinobi clan master, you lead your team of ninjas on secret missions that decide between life and death for dangerous ronin, noble daimyos and powerful shoguns. Recruit the most skilled assassins, arm them with the deadliest weapons, and devise plans that will outwit your rivals on your way to becoming the most feared and prosperous ninja clan of them all!

Shinobi Clans is a strategic card game for 3-5 players. As ninja clan leaders, players must master all facets of ninja warfare: Secretly select missions on targets that promise the biggest rewards with the least opposition. Muster the most suitable ninjas and weapons by card drafting. Position them tactically through a card stack mechanism that can disrupt your enemy's plans. Use secret unit deployment to your advantage and hope the other clans' spies don't uncover your strategy...

Until the final reveal, your clan's actions and motivations are shrouded in mystery. Can you throw the other clans off your trail while getting the job done? When the smoke clears, your schemes, ambition, and skill will be evident – but will they prevail?
Mayer visited the BGG booth during Gen Con and demoed the game while showing off the mind-blowing art. Mayer mentions that the card icons have been revised from that POD edition, and here are two such examples of the new look:
