IDW Games Revisits the Past for Future Releases with Masque of the Red Death, Dragon Ball Z: Perfect Cell, The Legend of Korra, and More
Board Game: Masque of the Red Death
• If you wanted to imagine a setting for a party game, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" probably wouldn't be the first thing to pop to mind. No surprise then that Adam Wyse's Masque of the Red Death, which IDW Games will Kickstart on January 10, 2018 for release later in the year, isn't a party game at all. Here's an overview of gameplay:

Quote:
As nobles at a magnificent masquerade ball, you and your friends all vie to improve your social standing. Gossip flies, rumors swirl, and with each chime of the ebony clock, hearts fill with dread and despair. As midnight approaches, you begin to realize that something is amiss.

Based on Edgar Allen Poe's sinister story, Masque of the Red Death pits you and up to six of your friends against each other as you hobnob with the Prince. But disaster strikes at midnight. You must balance your actions carefully between currying the Prince's factor and discovering which rooms the Red Death will visit. After all, having the highest social standing matters only if you survive...
Art for the game comes from Gris Grimly, who has illustrated and written children's books since 2001. While I appreciate work from long-time game artists, I'd love to see more artists brought into the game industry from outside fields to broaden the look of what shows up on shelves, as in the case of this game. I just played Dragon Castle for the first time, for example, and loved the look of the game that artist Cinyee Chiu created. Looking forward to seeing more art from Grimly on this title...

• Another 2018 title recently announced by IDW Games, with this being due out March 2018, is Dragon Ball Z: Perfect Cell from designer Chris Bryan, with this being the first title in a series of Dragon Ball Z board, tile-laying, and dice games from IDW, in partnership with Toei Animation. As for what's happening in this March 2018 release, here's an overview from the publisher:

Quote:
The Cell Games are on and the world's greatest fighters have gathered see if they have what it takes to defeat Cell, the perfect warrior. Teaming up to take him down, Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Krillin, Trunks and Piccolo must strategize together to stop the supposedly unstoppable machine.

In Dragon Ball Z: Perfect Cell, 2-4 players will each take control of an iconic Dragon Ball Z fighter and roll their dice to generate energy. Using custom icons, players allocate their dice to perform attacks, help other players, or buy upgrades. Players need to work together, though, as Cell will continue to generate new threats that can heal him, damage all players, or lock players out of potentially game-changing upgrades.

Board Game: Roar: King of the Pride
• We shot an overview of Roar: King of the Pride from Erica Bouyouris and Daryl Andrews during the 2017 Origins Game Fair when we had tons of free time and IDW had lots of prototypes on hand, but we didn't have a game listing at the time, so I had skipped publishing that video. Then Gen Con came, then SPIEL, and I've only just now rediscovered that overview.

This game, due out in February 2018, features the ever-awesome linework of Vincent Dutrait. Here's a written summary of the game for those who prefer it:

Quote:
In the wilds of Africa, lion prides rule over all beasts, but only one pride can rule over all the lions! In Roar: King of the Pride, three to six players compete to become the dominant pride of Africa. Managing your food supply, while expanding your territory and growing your pride size with cubs, will take strategic planning and key wits. Even the best-laid plans, however, can be interrupted by other prides' secret objectives, or worse…the encroachment of a new and deadly threat.

Board Game: Atari's Missile Command
The Legend of Korra: Pro-Bending Arena and the Amon's Invasion expansion, which are based on "The Legend of Korra" animated series on Nickelodeon, are both due out in February 2018 from designers Sen-Foong Lim and Jessey Wright.

Atari: Missile Command from Jon Gilmour and Violet Hargrave, the second title in IDW's Atari series following the release of Centipede in Q4 2017, is due out in March 2018, with Atari: Asteroids following later in the year.

• Other titles coming from IDW Games in 2018 include Slap Cat!, a quick-playing game in which you as a mad scientist are trying to assemble the world's most adorable cat from various parts; Jon Gilmour's Wayward, based on the Image Comics series of the same name in which superpowered teenagers must collectively defend the world from Yokai; Midway’s Joust, presumably being another video-game-to-board-game transformation; Nickelodeon Splat Attack!, a food fight game from Daryl Andrews and Michael Gray using Nickelodeon characters from the 1990s; and Outpost: Amazon, a sequel of sorts to Outpost: Siberia from Daryl Andrews and Jon Gilmour that bears this description:

Quote:
Welcome to Outpost 2, located deep in the Amazon. You and your team have been sent on an expedition into the jungle. Unfortunately, a recent report shows that the locals are moving away from the riverbanks; also, night vision surveillance has captured photos that seem too strange to be true. Take the river boat to safety, but investigate and try to capture these creatures from the photos. Do you have what it takes to make it through the jungle in Outpost: Amazon?
