Crowdfunding Round-up: Fidelitas, More Compounded, Musée, Clockwork Wars & Lift Off!

Crowdfunding Round-up: Fidelitas, More Compounded, Musée, Clockwork Wars & Lift Off!
Board Game: Musée
Thank God for Kickstarter. If it weren't for kickstarter, the gaming world might have missed out on an expansion to the top 50 and massively popular The Resistance, an expansion to the top 200 and also massively popular Flash Point, AND a new Feld! Whoo! That was close. There is no way those would have been viable business ventures otherwise. Now we can all sit back and eat a little potato salad while enjoying a VP salad from my boy Feld. Thank you, Kickstarter, for making the world a better place.

I will be at Gen Con 2014, so if you see me please say "Hi!" or yell "You suck!" as you head the other direction. Either way.

• KS and game industry veterans Gryphon Games has launched Musée, a new entry in its famous bookshelf series. Also available are new editions of Sleuth by Sid Sackson, Lord and Ladies by Jason Corace, and an updated version of Wyatt Earp by Mike Fitzgerald and Richard Borg. (KS link) I am a big fan of the bookshelf series. So many good Knizias, For Sale, RTTA; that is hallowed company for Musée designer Alf Seegert. Grats to Alf! It looks like you can add on any assortment of games so that is going to be one nightmare of a KS survey. No, I didn't F@#$%^ING order a T-shirt. I ordered one copy of one gosh damn game. Where is the "check this box if your ordered one copy of the gosh damn game question and skip the rest of the F@#$%^ING questions" option?! Either way, the guys at Gryphon are pros, so I am sure it will work out.

Quote:
Musée is a fast-paced card game in which you collect impossibly valuable works of art and put them on display in your own personal art museum, the Musée. The only problem is that your opponents are doing the very same thing! Each gallery must be organized properly by exhibit number, but to succeed you must balance your passion for order with the need for public acclaim. Impress visitors by tastefully positioning works of art side-by-side showing similar themes. Make sure you don't get too greedy for applause, though — doing so might disorganize your collection and keep you from displaying any more paintings!

The first player to complete each separate gallery will open the exhibition early and receive extra recognition. The player who displays the most compelling combination of artworks in the most artistic manner is the winner. Musée includes sixty unique fine art images from artists ranging from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries, all licensed through Bridgeman Art Library.

Lords and Ladies is a card game in which you control a turn of the 20th century noble family and its servants. Your goal is to raise your family's status through careful marriages, hiring servants and having children all the while destroying rival families through gossip, backstabbing, and using superior wit!

Wyatt Earp was first produced by alea in 2001. The Gryphon Games edition (currently being produced in China), updates the graphics but retains the original rules (one change was made by the designers) and flavor of the game!

Sleuth is a fascinating detective game for 3 to 7 players. This classic game was first published in 1971, and has since then sold more than 100,000 copies. Gryphon Games is proud to give it a permanent home in the Gryphon Bookshelf Series! Through skillful questioning of his opponents, each player gathers evidence and then, using his powers of deduction and logic, attempts to discover the identity of the missing gem!
For Sale is in my top 5 — such a great game.

Board Game: Compounded: Geiger Expansion
Dice Hate Me Games is back with more chemistry related gaming, bringing you the much anticipated Compounded: Geiger Expansion. In case you missed the 7-8 humblebrags spread throughout the KS page about how popular Compounded is, I can tell you first hand that people LOVE Compounded. My wife and parents request it nearly every game night. Ben Pinchback and I were working the DHM booth at Origins 2014 demoing Monster Truck Mayhem (DHM 2105!) and EVERY person that walked up to the booth wanted to demo or buy Compounded. They ran out of copies early in the con, and disappointed consumers were stuck buying much less popular games about coffee and/or carnival rides.

It doesn't hurt that the video is pretty dang funny and designer Darrell Louder is wearing one LOUD sweater! Ha! See what I did there? Cause his name is LOUDer! Seriously though, that is one ugly @ss sweater. That sweater is so ugly when George Clooney wore it on Facts of Life that they locked him in the closet with the heavyset girl as punishment. (Maybe they got stuck in there. I dunno. I am old and forget stuff, but seriously George Clooney was on Facts of Life with Mrs. Garrett's bosom. For reals.). Also go back it, I did. (KS link)

Quote:
Compounded: Geiger Expansion is the first full expansion for the popular chemistry board game, Compounded. This Kickstarter campaign has been created to bring that expansion to your lab table, as well as allow us to bring the second edition of the base game of Compounded to all those who have yet to experience the joy of science!

The Geiger Expansion gives experienced scientists even more to consider in the lab with the introduction of radioactive elements and compounds. Scientists will have to keep a close eye on the Geiger counter, because as productivity in the lab increases, so does the chance for radioactivity levels to soar dangerously high.
All jokes aside, Compounded is a really fun and accessible game with a neat theme.

Board Game: Clockwork Wars
Eagle Games has launched the very ambitious looking Clockwork Wars. I know nothing about this game except the box is big and there is steampunky art. It is also pricey. There looks to be some hexes and such, cards with neat-o drawings, and errrrm disks. There was some buzz at Origins 2014 about this one, and it is off to a pretty good start.

Quote:
In Clockwork Wars, 2-4 players command a unique race of creatures in a brisk, tense war game set in a alternate universe where magic and steam-era technology collide. Take control of the calculating Purebreeds, the industrious Troglodytes, the mighty Rhinochs, or the proud Mongrels.

Your goal is to vanquish your foes and accumulate the most victory points through seven turns of play. You earn points by fighting for control of territories that contain valuable natural resources. To win these battles, you need manpower gained by seizing villages and developing them into cities. Invest in research and discover astonishing new technologies, like Golems, Submersibles, and Analytical Engines. Position your troops, research powerful discoveries, employ espionage, and conquer your enemies to win the game!
Someone that backed it tell us more about it below.

Board Game: Fidelitas
• Designer Jason Kotarski is launching Fidelitas, the first title from his new company Green Couch Games. Fidelitas is a quick-playing filler card game and was co-designed by Philip duBarry. It features art from the incredibly talented Jacqui Davis. Jason and Philip are two of the nicest guys you will ever meet in the gaming industry. If you get a chance, sit down and talk with either of them at a con. It will be completely worth your time. (KS link)

Quote:
In Fidelitas, players take on the role of faithful citizens in a medieval city exerting influence in order to gain the credibility needed to lead the charge against the corrupt crown. Players play character cards to various locations that make up the city in order to meet conditions of hidden objectives. Each type of character card is associated with a unique action that manipulates cards in the game; use the Butcher to bully other characters to new locations, use the Student to gain more cards, use the Soldier to keep the peasants from loitering too long.

In this game where keen maneuvering is key, attentiveness to the opposition may uncover hidden motives that seek to foil your bid for power. The first player to gain a certain number points depending on the number of players is determined worthy to lead the revolt, and also wins the game.

Fidelitas is a game for 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up and plays in 20-30 minutes.
Board Game: Lift Off! Get me off this Planet!
• Now for something at the other end of the gaming spectrum, designer Eduardo Baraf is self-publishing Lift Off! Get Me Off This Planet!. (KS link) Lift Off! is a neat-looking family friendly game with cute art.

Quote:
Lift Off! has a casual space theme and never takes itself too seriously. My goal was to make an easy to learn, fast-paced game, where everyone feels engaged and "in it" until someone has won or the planet explodes!

The objective of Lift Off! is to be the first player to get their Aliens off the planet using resource cards, action cards‚ and phases of the moon to escape. If the planet explodes before everyone escapes‚ the player with the most saved Aliens wins.

What's special about Lift Off! is that board pieces (such as the rocket ship, satellite, U.F.O., etc) are all different and often require multiple players to work together to take off. For example, the rocket ship takes a lot of resources (six fuel and six screws) and can carry six aliens from various players. This creates a great dynamic of semi-co-operative play that can turn real competitive, real fast; initially all players work together to get the first half of their aliens off the planet. Once the population starts thinning, people become more competitive and tricky, using action cards to manipulate the moon, terraform the board, create tornadoes, and more.
Sounds pretty easy and fun.

Board Game: Eight-Minute Empire: Lost Lands
Quick Hits

Red Raven Games is back with Eight-Minute Empire: Lost Lands, an expansion for Eight-Minute Empire: Legends. (KS link) I always wondered what would happen if someone did Seven-Minute Empire, so I asked designer Ryan Laukat.

Me: What if somebody comes up with Seven-Minute Empire. Then you're in trouble, huh?
Ryan: No! No, no, not seven! I said eight. Nobody's comin' up with seven. Who plays a game in seven minutes? You won't even get your build goin'!
Me: That - good point.
Ryan: Eight's the key number here. Think about it. Eight, man, that's the number. Eight chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
Me: Why?
Ryan: 'Cause you're fired!

(That probably wasn't a real interview.)

• Scott King is back with his 2015 Gaming Calendar full of top notch photos of cool boardgames. I am in for the second year in a row.

Going, Going, Gone!

This happened. And it was good. Potato Salad.

See you in a month, and remember that if you have any questions, shoot me a Geekmail or post it in here. Complaints and/or rants can be directed at W. Eric. It was likely his fault anyway.

Editor's note: Please don't post links to other Kickstarter projects in the comments section. Write to me via the email address in the header, and I'll consider them for inclusion in a future crowdfunding round-up. Thanks! —WEM
