Here's a rundown of this 1-4 player game that plays in 90-150 minutes:
Each player has a set of five action cards to manage their gameplay, and the power of an action is determined by the slot the card currently occupies. The cards in question are:
—CARDS: Allows you to gain new zoo cards (animals, sponsors, and conservation project cards).
—BUILD: Allows you to build standard or special enclosures, kiosks, and pavilions.
—ANIMALS: Allows you to accommodate animals in your zoo.
—ASSOCIATION: Allows your association workers to carry out different tasks.
—SPONSORS: Allows you to play a sponsor card in your zoo or to raise money.
255 cards featuring animals, specialists, special enclosures, and conservation projects, each with a special ability, are at the heart of Ark Nova. Use them to increase the appeal and scientific reputation of your zoo and collect conservation points.
• Another titles on the SPIEL '21 Preview that might appeal more to the hardcore gamer is Schichtwechsel: Die Förderung liegt in deiner Hand (translated: "Shift Change: The Mining Is in Your Hand") from German publisher Spielefaible and designer Thomas Spitzer, best known for The Ruhr: A Story of Coal Trade and Haspelknecht.
Like those two earlier games, Schichtwechsel is about coal mining in the Ruhr region in Germany. Spitzer apparently lives by the saying that you should design games about what you know — assuming that he is an expert on coal mining in the Ruhr region in Germany, mind you. I'm hardly one to contest such claims, and you probably aren't either.
In any case, here's an overview of this 2-4 player game that plays in 60-90 minutes:
The game Schichtwechsel takes up this theme and shows simplified typical areas around the coal mining in the Ruhr area of the 1950s. As a player and administrator of a coal mine, you experience an exciting competition and live through a piece of Ruhr Valley history. You bring coal and overburden from underground to the surface, let your miner go through a "shift at the colliery", produce coke, or build the typical colliery settlements.
A game of Schichtwechsel takes place over five rounds, and each round consists of three phases: The preparation phase in which, among other things, the amount of mined coal is determined; the action phase in which players use their action pieces wisely in turn; and a small end-of-round evaluation. After the fifth round is a final scoring. Schichtwechsel offers you many possibilities to get the best out of your coal mine in order to score as many victory points as possible at the end.
This game is the revised and improved version of the game Die lettze Zeche, which was created between June 2017 and March 2018 as a contribution of the games group Fair-Spielt of the Spielezentrum Herne to the funding project "GLÜCK AUF JUGEND". The RAG Foundation's sponsorship project honors the achievements of coal mining on the occasion of the coal phase-out and the closure of the last mines at the end of 2018.
