CATAN Rises from the Table in a New 3D Edition

CATAN Rises from the Table in a New 3D Edition
In 2005, German publisher KOSMOS released CATAN 3D Collector's Edition, a special edition of Klaus Teuber's award-winning game CATAN to celebrate its tenth anniversary. This edition came packaged in a wooden chest and included both the CATAN base game and the Cities & Knights expansion with components for up to four players. The retail price was US$300, and it's been long out of print, typically selling for $500-700 on the BGG marketplace.

Now KOSMOS and Catan Studio are partnering on a new 3D edition of CATAN, suitably named CATAN: 3D Edition:

Board Game: CATAN: 3D Edition

I first saw a mock-up of the set at NY Toy Fair in February 2020 when it was in a very unfinished state. Now the publishers have revealed pics of the final look, with CATAN: 3D Edition due for release in North America in August 2021 and in Europe in the second half of 2021 with a retail price of US$300/€300.

Here's what the set looks like, along with a few quotes from the press release:
Quote:
This long-awaited 3D Edition of the contemporary classic board game CATAN is based on terrain tiles that were hand sculpted by the game designer Klaus Teuber himself. All of the terrain is hand painted for stunning color, and intricately designed player pieces are antiqued for a look that is full of history and character.

Board Game: CATAN: 3D Edition

"CATAN – 3D Edition is the product of years of diligent effort and attention to detail," said Pete Fenlon, CEO of CATAN Studio. "Our goal was to create a durable premium product that not only looks beautiful on a game table, but that also creates a visually stunning foundation for immersive storytelling."

Quote:
"The gaming hobby has grown by leaps and bounds since the last time we released a 3D edition more than 15 years ago," Fenlon said. "There is a whole new generation of players who have been eagerly awaiting this game. Using refined designs and improved technology, we're thrilled to finally be able to share it with them."
