On March 5, 2013, I noted that U.S. publisher WizKids Games had a counter on its website counting down the seconds until March 11, with the numbers appearing in a Star Trek font. Obviously something big was in the works to be announced this day, but two days before the big reveal, someone at StarTrek.com pulled the rug out from under WizKids by posting about Star Trek: Attack Wing, a space combat game that would combine Star Trek vehicles with a licensed FlightPath maneuver system from Fantasy Flight Games, this system having been used in FFG's Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. Scooped by their own licensor!

Well, now the day has come and WizKids has indeed revealed that Star Trek: Attack Wing is its big news this day. Here's a short description of the game setting and play from the publisher:

Quote:
Star Trek: Attack Wing is a tactical space combat HeroClix miniatures game, featuring collectible pre-painted ships from the Star Trek Universe.

By using the FlightPath maneuver system (licensed from Fantasy Flight Games), players engage in exploration and combat, traversing sprawling Star Trek space maps made available via an in-store Organized Play program. As commander, players have the ability to customize, upgrade, and assign famous crewmembers to their fleets, which feature ships from the series' prominent empires and forces as well as special stats and abilities, and unique maneuvers on separate HeroClix Combat Dials.
Why reinvent the wheel, after all, when a perfectly good wheel already exists and can be customized to a property you already hold a license for? Especially when fans will salivate at the idea of developing rules to facilitate battles between starships from the two series?

WizKids has promised more details about Star Trek: Attack Wing in the near future, with the game debuting at Gen Con 2013 this coming August.

Update, March 11, 2013: Justin Ziran has sent along the following clarification about the game: "Star Trek: Attack Wing uses the core rule set of the FlightPath game system with a Star Trek twist, but is not compatible with other FlightPath games from FFG."
