Caylus 1303 (2019)

Quarrelsome master builders compete for supplies and specialists to impress the King.

Complexity: 2.88/5

A classic game is back! As one of the first worker placement games, Caylus stands among the true board game classics of the 2000s. The original designers' team, together with the Space Cowboys, have now created a revamped version!

The mechanisms of Caylus 1303 have been streamlined and modernized for an intense and shorter game. Don't be fooled, though, as the game has kept both its depth and ease of play while a lot of new features have been added:

  • Variability of the starting position for a virtual infinity of possibilities. No more pre-set strategies!
  • Characters with special abilities, with a wavering loyalty, offer their services to the players.
  • And of course, brand new graphics!

The King calls you again, so it's time to go back to Caylus!

I don't always feel like I love the power tiles, but they also have had some good moments of player tension in vying for them. Beautifully streamlined currency and playtime make this a great adaptation.

First impression: I've never played the original Caylus, but to the extent that the publishers wanted to put out a game that would "resonate with modern audiences", I think 1303 nails it. The worker placement feels fresh and modern, and the resource economy is compellingly tight. The blocking power of the Provost and the ability to steal character powers make the game meaner than a lot of modern Euros, but these systems feel so tightly integrated with the rest of the game, so necessary as play progresses, that it's hard to feel upset when you're on the receiving end. I'm very impressed, and looking forward to playing more of this.

Despite having few shared incentives baked into the design, the ones that are there are great. Obviously the provost blocking is the stand-out feature in this game, and I love how brutal and swingy it can be. For a worker placement game also, the worker blocking feels more dickish than is other games of its ilk. Additionally, there are a few different strategies to employ here: buildings, bundles, and monasteries. The interesting part is that the table can almost decide whether or not these are even viable throughout the game. If the level two buildings are constantly blocked from being built for the majority of the game, the game will be poorer for all players, and monasteries nigh impossible to build. Vs the original: This is shorter, prettier, and less taxing to track your resources as you play through a round. I don't think it loses any of its meanness, it just does it in a quicker and more streamlined package. It's a win in my book.
